That is why the election of Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf earlier this month as Chairperson of the Economic Community for West African States (ECOWAS) is historic and refreshing.

President Johnson-Sirleaf was elected at the 49th Ordinary Session of Heads of State of the Regional bloc held in Dakar, Senegal.

The 77 year-old Harvard-trained economist takes over from Senegal’s Macky Sall, at the end of his term.

Several Presidents from the regional bloc were present at the summit.

President Johnson-Sirleaf’s 12 months tenure will oversee three major elections in the West African Sub Region this year. Ghana, Cape Verde and the Gambia will be holding their general election this year.

The Commission will deploy three states technical pre-election missions to assess preparations on the ground as well as an election observation missions to each of the countries — Ellen Johnson Sirleaf Leads Africa.
